Shillong Lajong surprised Sporting Clube de Goa to register their first victory in the I-League in Panaji on Thursday.
Lajong, who suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of JCT in their opening match, scored the important goal in the 16th minute through a free kick from Boithang Haokic at the Tilak Ground.
Sporting was the dominant of the two sides and controlled the the proceedings for a major part of the match but failed to convert the opportunities that came their way.
They had an early chance to surge ahead in the sixth minute but Anthony D'souza squandered it. Anthony failed to guide the ball on target from inside the box.
Meanwhile, Lajong capitalized on a free kick that was after keeper Gerald had stepped out of the box while collecting an aerial ball.
Sporting continued to dictate terms in the second half as well but failed to find an opening as they were frustrated by their rivals who closed the gaps by packing more men in the defence.
Lajong now have three points from a win and defeat, while Sporting are yet to open their account after their opening match against Air-India was washed out.
Air India beat Pune FC
Meanwhile in Pune, Air India defeated Pune FC 1-0 in the second round encounter at the Balewadi Sports Complex.
The match winner for the Mumbai outfit was scored by midfielder Ravinder Singh in the 11th minute with a free kick.
Mumbai FC had drawn their first round encounter against East Bengal. Air India's first round match against Sporting Clube de Goa was washed out.
