Dempo Sports Club scored a comfortable 5-0 victory over Sporting Clube de Goa in the second round match of the I-League at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Friday.
Anthony Pereira and Ryuji Sueoka were the goal getters for Dempo in the first session while Clifford Miranda scored a brace of goals and Koko Sakibo scored a penalty in injury time.
For Dempo, coach Armando Colaco opted to start with former Arsenal player Rohan Ricketts in central midfield, thus leaving experienced midfielder Climax Lawrence on the bench. At the other end, Sporting coach Ekendra Singh was forced to bring in Prathesh Shirodkar to take the place of injured Mackroy Peixoto in midfield.
Prayag down Bagan for second victory
Prayag United erased a goal's deficit to beat Mohun Bagan 2-1 at Kolkata's Salt Lake stadium.
Okolie Odafa put Mohun Bagan in the lead early in the first half, but the team failed to preserve the advantage, conceding two goals thereafter.
Nigerian Ranti Martins and New Zealander Kayne Vincent found the target in tandem for United SC, which effectively defended the lead in a barren second half to ensure full three points from the match.
- Lebanese striker Moghrabi 'tricks' in Churchill's big win
Having lost its first round 'away' outing 0-2 to Shillong Lajong FC, Mohun Bagan began in the earnest and pressed for the lead, making regular forays into the United SC box.
With United SC left-back Sukhen Dey setting up a cross in the Mohun Bagan box, Metei failed to mark United striker Ranti Martins, who appeared to find a touch and send the ball over the approaching Bagan goalkeeper, Arindam Bhattacharya.
Encouraged by the equaliser, United SC doubled its attacks and found the lead in the 45th minute. Kayne Vincent, who replaced suspended defender Bello Rasaq as the third foreigner in the team, tapped the ball home before Arindam could come out to clear.
Prayag United have six points after two wins, while Mohun Bagan remain at the bottom without a point.
Shillong Lajong hold Salgaocar
Shillong Lajong FC rallied to snatch an away point from Salgaocar FC after they held the Goan giants to a 1-1 draw at the J N Sports Complex.
After Friday's result, Lajong have four points from two matches, while Salgaocar one from two.
It was the visitors who dominated the first half, but were little unlucky not to open their account. In the fifth minute, a measured flag-kick of Rocus Lamare, which was headed by Angel Guirado, was well-punched by custodian Lalthuammawia Ralte for a corner. Had the ball been an inch here and there the story would have been different.
In the 29th minute, Lajong came close scoring when Boithang Haokip took a wild shot after Sushil Kumar Singh set him up brilliantly. Haokip had all the time under the sun, but took a wild shot which went flying miles away from the target.
The scorecard read 0-0 at the breather.
A perfect free-kick in the 52nd minute by Angel Guirado gave no room for the home side's goalkeeper to go for the ball.
But their joy was shattered a minute later when Ebi Theopillus Sukore made no mistake and converted a cross volley Sushil Kumar Singh to restore parity.
Lajong's North Korean defender Minchol Son was later declared the man of the match.
