August 20, 2013

India added a silver and bronze to swell their medal tally to six in their controversy-ridden Asian Youth Games campaign on the fifth day of the multi-sporting event, in Nanjing, on Tuesday.

Manu Gandas won the silver in golf while Saroj Ajay Kumar bagged a bronze in 1500m to bring some cheer to the Indians, whose campaign was embroiled in an overage issue leading to the disqualification of 18 track and field athletes and three weightlifters.

Four badminton players were also thrown out after their entries were sent late by the federation officials.

Gandas ended with a three-round total of 11-under 205 to finish second behind Yu Chun-An (13-under 203) of Chinese Taipei in the men's individual stroke play at the Zhongshan International Golf Club.

Boonma Danthai of Thailand was third with nine-under 207.

In the women's individual stroke play, Ashok Aditi finished 10th.

Ajay Kumar clocked 4:05.76 second to finish third behind Wang Wei (4:03.75) of China and Assadi Zakalaki Ata (4:05.09) of Iran at the Nanjing OSC stadium.

In the girls’ 100m hurdles, Ankita Sunil Gosavi qualified for the final round after finishing second in her heat in 14.60 seconds.

The Indians, who are participating as Independent Olympic Athletes since the IOA is serving a ban, have won one gold, one silver and four bronze. They occupy 11th place in the medal tally.
