Vettel wins in Spa despite Button heroics

August 28, 2011 19:27 IST

Sebastian Vettel drove a superb race to win the Belgian Grand Prix ahead of Mark Webber as Red Bull enjoyed a one-two at Spa-Francorchamps.

Yet Jenson Button produced arguably the drive of the day by finishing third despite having started down in 13th place -- an amazing result for McLaren, whose afternoon had looked like being ruined when Lewis Hamilton crashed out 12 laps into the race.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso challenged for the lead for most of the race, but struggled on his final set of tyres to finish a disappointing fourth.

There was joy for Michael Schumacher, however, who proved that he still has what it takes by scything through the field to finish fifth despite having started at the back of the grid following an incident in qualifying.

But the afternoon belonged to Red Bull, with championship leader Vettel ending a barren spell that had seen him go without a victory in three races.
