Football Extras: Lemar leaves it late to give Atletico win at Eibar

Atletico Madrid's record signing Thomas Lemar came off the bench to score late on and snatch a 1-0 win at Eibar on Saturday, provisionally taking Atletico six points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Diego Simeone's side have 68 points after 33 games, six fewer than Barca who can restore their advantage at the top of the table back to nine points when they host Real Sociedad later on Saturday.

France winger Lemar settled an exciting and open game in the 85th minute, racing towards the far post to meet a pass from midfielder Koke and slam the ball into the net from close range.

"This is a very important win for us," said Atletico coach Simeone.

"In the first half we thought we could cause them more damage by playing a short passing game and in the second half things were more even and it became clear whoever scored first would win the game. Luckily it was us."

Atletico were without top scorer Antoine Griezmann due to a one-match suspension as well as missing striker Diego Costa, who has been banned for the remainder of the season for insulting a referee.

Yet they still had the better chances and should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Argentine forward Angel Correa burst into the box but fired straight into the body of Eibar keeper Marko Dmitrovic.

Spain striker Alvaro Morata also had a good chance to break the deadlock for Atletico shortly after the interval but missed the target from inside the box.

Koke later had a shot tipped over the bar from Dmitrovic, who pulled off an even better save to keep out a header from Atleti captain Diego Godin.

Eibar's Joan Jordan gave Atletico keeper Jan Oblak a scare with a long-range dipping shot which landed just over the bar, moments before Lemar finally found a breakthrough, giving Atletico their fifth consecutive win away to Eibar.

Suele winner keeps Bayern on track for Bundesliga title

Champions Bayern Munich scored a narrow 1-0 victory over visiting Werder Bremen on Saturday to stay on course for a seventh successive Bundesliga title.

Niklas Suele drilled in a 75th-minute winner to lift the Bavarians to 70 points, four clear of Borussia Dortmund, who are in action against Freiburg on Sunday, with four matches left in the season.

It was the first loss for Werder in 2019 and the first game in all competitions this season when they failed to score.

Bayern had the upper hand throughout and fired more than a dozen shots before beating keeper Jiri Pavlenka, who had previously made a string of superb saves.

Serge Gnabry had the hosts' best chance in the first half when he turned to latch onto a Thiago Alcantara chip but his volley was saved by Pavlenka.

The Germany winger then had a double chance six minutes after the restart but again Pavlenka came to the rescue, tipping his shot onto the post.

The keeper also repeatedly denied Bundesliga leading scorer Robert Lewandowski before his team were reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute when Milos Veljkovic was sent off for a second booking.

Bayern finally broke the deadlock when defender Suele shot from the edge of the box, the ball taking a slight deflection to beat Pavlenka.

Lazio stunned by relegated Chievo after first-half red card

Lazio had playmaker Sergej Milinkovic-Savic sent off in the first half as they lost 2-1 at home to relegated Chievo in Serie A on Saturday on a disastrous day for their Champions League hopes.

Second-half goals from teenager Emanuel Vignato and Perparim Hetemaj gave the Flying Donkeys, condemned to Serie B last week with six games still to play, only their second win of the season and the first this year.

The defeat meant that Lazio dropped below Torino into eighth place with 52 points, four adrift of the top four places where they need to finish to qualify for the Champions League.

Lazio were in trouble from the moment that Milinkovic-Savic was given his marching orders in the 34th minute for lashing out after being fouled by Mariusz Stepinski.

Vignato, 18, curled in his first Serie A goal in the 49th minute and Hetemaj headed the second two minutes later.

Felipe Caicedo replied for Lazio and Joaquin Correa hit the post in stoppage time before the hosts had Luis Alberto sent off on the final whistle for dissent.

Torino boost Champions League hopes as Genoa fans stay away

Torino boosted their chances of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time by winning 1-0 at Genoa whose fans stayed away in protest at the club's leadership on Saturday.

Cristian Ansaldi scored the winner against his former club when he rifled home from the edge of the area after Alex Berenguer laid the ball off in the 58th minute of the Serie A game.

Torino, also indebted to goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu who made a brilliant one-handed save from Christian Kouame late on, moved into seventh place with 53 points, three behind fourth-placed AC Milan who they host in their next game on April 28.

The Luigi Ferraris stadium was barely half full, with no banners or flags on display, as many Genoa fans boycotted the game in protest over club president Enrico Preziosi's running of the club.

Preziosi said on Friday that he wanted to sell the club and shared the fans' frustration. "I am as fed up as everyone else but there haven't been any serious offers," he said.

Torino played in the old European Cup in 1976/77 but have never taken part under the Champions League format.

PSG'S Neymar could be back on Sunday 

Brazil striker Neymar could return to playing on Sunday when Paris St Germain take on Monaco in Ligue 1, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Saturday.

"He has been working hard, with a good mindset. We could get him back as soon as tomorrow," Tuchel told a news conference.

Neymar, who has scored 13 goals from 13 league appearances this season, has been out of action since picking up a foot injury in January. PSG will clinch their eighth Ligue 1 title if they beat Monaco at the Parc des Princes.

With Neymar missing from action, PSG were knocked out of the Champions League last 16 after losing the return leg 3-1 at home to Manchester United. They beat the Premier League club 2-0 in the first leg at Old Trafford.

With Edinson Cavani also out injured lately, and several key players unfit, the side have picked up only one point from their last three Ligue 1 games.

They will take on Stade Rennais in the French Cup final next Saturday, a game for which Tuchel is also hoping to be able to bring on captain Thiago Silva who sustained a muscle injury last weekend.

PSG, who have 81 points from 32 games, lead second-placed Lille by 17 points. Lille travel to Toulouse on Sunday.

Lyon beat Angers to consolidate Ligue 1 third place

Olympique Lyonnais returned to winning ways when they beat visiting Angers 2-1 on Friday to consolidate third place in Ligue 1.

Memphis Depay and Martin Terrier found the back of the net in the first half to put Lyon, who had lost their three previous games in all competitions, on 59 points from 33 matches.

The visitors pulled a goal back with one minute left thanks to Lucas Tousart's own goal.

Lyon trail second-placed Lille, who have a game in hand, by five points but lead fourth-placed St Etienne by six ahead of Les Verts' trip to Stade Reims on Sunday.

The top three in Ligue 1 qualify for the Champions League, with the third-placed team starting in the third qualifying round for Europe's premier club competition.

Depay started the game at the Groupama stadium after beginning the last two matches on the bench and he did not disappoint.

The Dutch forward collected Hassem Aouar's through ball before beating Ludovic Butelle with a powerful shot to put Lyon ahead after 14 minutes.

Aouar played Terrier through for the hosts' second goal six minutes into the second half.

Lyon's domination continued but Butelle pulled off several great saves to deny Depay and Terrier before Tousart diverted Angelo Fulgini's cross into his own net.

Earlier, Dijon beat Stade Rennais 3-2 at home to stay in 18th place, meaning they look set to take part in the relegation/promotion playoffs.

Leaders Paris St Germain will clinch the title if they beat AS Monaco at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.
