Viswanathan Anand's father was ecstatic after his son's triumph over Vladimir Kramnik in the final of the World Chess Championship in Bonn on Wednesday.

The Indian ace retained the World crown after a 24-move draw in the 11th and penultimate round of the 12-game final.

"A great job done, my son," were the first words of Anand's father, Viswanathan, after victory was clinched.

He confessed that the family was tense for the last few days, particularly after Kramnik won the tenth game to cut Anand's lead.

Wednesday's result, he said, was huge relief.

"It was a lone battle Anand fought. Today, he has the entire nation behind him," added the proud father.

Anand, playing with white pieces in the 11the game, took an unbeatable 6.5-4.5 lead after the draw to retain the title.
