Swarms of moths flew around the Stade de France stadium before soccer's European Championship final between France and Portugal on Sunday.

Team officials walking on the pitch shortly before kickoff were seen shaking off the uninvited insects.

"The floodlights stayed on all night and all the moths around flocked the stadium," a security officer told Reuters.

But one person gave a funny twist to the moth attack that broke the internet.

When Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was grounded by a twisted knee after colliding with France’s Dimitri Payet, a moth was seen buzzing around Ronaldo’s face.

As Ronaldo cried over his fate while the moth sat on his eye, some clever folk decided to create a meme out of the situation.

The picture was altered and the moth was given the face of Argentina and FC Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi.

And did that image take Twitter into a tizzy. Reportedly, nearly 400 Twitter accounts were set up to post that picture.

There were also other Twitter handles that made the moth a big topic of discussion.

Yübbîę Umoh @Yubbie007  wrote: #Ronaldo was inflicted with a Moth injury by a French Moth.

Tear gas fired at fan zone before France-Portugal match.

Another person called Eric Severson @seversoneric tweeted: 15min into the final & Ronaldo is on a stretcher due to an injury. Luckily moth is there to console him #PORvsFRA.

Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore Ronaldo and the moth that sat on his face.
