Contract extension in the offing for United's Van Persie

Netherlands football team captain and Manchester United forward, Robin van Persie, is reportedly set to be offered a two-year extension to his current deal, which is due to expire at the end of next season.

After a brilliant first season at Old Trafford, Van Persie's last campaign was wrecked by injury and his future at United has been questioned after a quiet start to this season.

According to The Daily Star, there has been talk of Van Persie moving to one of Turkey's big clubs, Galatasaray or Fenerbahce, or a return to Holland, but United boss Louis van Gaal remains a fan of his World Cup captain in Brazil this summer.

United want to protect their original 22 million pounds investment in Van Persie, as they believe plenty of clubs would want him if he was out of contract and available on a free transfer.

But United might want the former Arsenal star to take a pay cut on his current 2,50,000 pounds-a-week deal, which might prove to be a potential stumbling block to an extension being agreed.

However, the fact that United's policy generally is to offer players in their 30s only 12-month rolling deals should impress the Dutch striker. United would be making an exception in his case, underlining that they do not want to lose him, the report added.
