India's P Kashyap pulled off a major upset, defeating third seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 21-9, 21-19 to storm into the men's singles quarter-finals of Denmark Open Super Series badminton championship in Odense on Friday.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist produced a clinical display against the higher-ranked Thai opponent to emerge triumphant in just 31 minutes.
The unseeded world No 38 began the match against world No 10 Ponsana on a confident note and built a 6-1 lead in the first game before consolidating his position with the help of some long rallies and drop winners.
In the second game, the Indian was ahead 7-2 before the Thai made a comeback bid and took a 10-9 lead.
At one stage, the score was level 13-all, but Kashyap displayed soft touch skills and grabbed four points in a row to clinch the issue.
Kashyap next faces world No 26 Pengyu Du, the only Chinese in the draw, in the quarter-finals.
The two other Indians in the singles, Chetan Anand and Anand Pawar, are already out of the tournament.
