Aiyar heads C'wealth Games apex committee

Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the reconstituted Apex Committee for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The committee will have the responsibility of overseeing and coordinating the Games, to be hosted by New Delhi in four years' time.

The details of all other committees related to the conduct of the mega event will be submitted to the Apex Committee periodically.

The chairman of the apex committee will have the power to call for such information which he deems fit and to give such guidance that may be required, a government statement said.

S Y Quraishi, secretary Youth Affairs and Sports, will be the convenor and member secretary of the committee.

The other members of the reconstituted committee are: former Union Minister Ram Niwas Mirdha, NASSCOM president Kiran Karnik, Volleyball Federation of India president P Sivanthi Adityan (subject to confirmation), ICICI chairman and M D K V Kamath, former additional chief secretary of Maharashtra S Shankar Menon, former vice-chancellor of Delhi University Deepak Nayyar, former Comptroller & Auditor General V K Shunglu, senior lawyer K T S Tulsi, chairman of HCL Technologies Shiv Nadar, former Railway Board chairman Prakash Narain and senior advocate V S Ailawadi.
