September 17, 2009 22:17 IST

Goa teams Churchill Brothers and Dempo advanced to the semi-finals in the 122nd edition of the Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi on Thursday.

While Churchill drew 1-1 with Assam Rifles and topped Group 'A' with four points, Dempo, riding on a Ranty Martins strike, defeated Army XI 1-0 in their Group III match.

Assam Rifles, who dominated most part of the first half, scored in the 55th minute through striker Meikingai Kamei when midfielder Ajit Singh put the ball in the clear to deliver his side the lead.

However, Churchill drew parity in the 71st minute with substitute midfielder Charan Rai converting a fine pass from the right by Nascimento Silveira with his left foot.

Churchill had beaten Sporting Clube de Goa 1-0 in their opening match, while Assam Rifles had lost 0-2 to Sporting Clube.

Dempo took the lead 13 minutes into the second session after a good move between defender Mahesh Gawli and medio Joaquim Abranches, which was finished by Nigerian striker Martins.

Dempo had earlier beaten Air India 4-1.
