Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated local boy Di Wu in straight sets to reach the second round of the China Open on Tuesday.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over his Chinese opponent Wu in the opening round that lasted one hour and 26 minutes.

Third seed Nadal, who has had a disappointing season so far, is looking to bounce back from his latest Grand Slam disappointment and take a step toward confirming his place at November's ATP World Tour Finals.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic continued his rich vein of form as he claimed a comfortable straight-set win over Italian player Simone Bolelli to advance to the second round.

The Serbian defending champion clinched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bolelli in a thrilling opening round match that lasted one hour and eleven minutes.
