Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted the current squad at his disposal is too small to mount any serious challenge for trophies this season, and believes he needs to bring in more quality players to improve their chances.

Rodgers' Liverpool would face Hearts in a Europa League play-off first-leg clash on Thursday, with a place in the competition proper at stake.

But as much as the Rodgers is desperate to bring another Euro crown to Anfield as well as finish in the Champions League slots, he knows his squad currently lacks the depth to do so.

"I had a target list of players I wanted to bring in but that was always conditional because of the monies that had been paid out here. The club are working very hard behind the scenes to manage that process to allow us to get some players in," The Sun quoted Rodgers, as saying.

"But in terms of the depth, it is nowhere near where I would want it to be — we have a very small squad. I can't wave a magic wand to bring players in and get players out but there is still a bit of time left," he added.

"Hopefully, come the end of August, we'll be ready to go on with the group we want," he said.

Rodgers' big problem has been getting rid of fringe players who were locked into big deals, with Alberto Aquilani now at Fiorentina on 6.5 million pounds a year alone.

After getting Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez, Fabio Aurelio and Craig Bellamy's wages off the books, Rodgers desperately needs to buy.
