Junior Athletics World Champion Hima Das was the first sportsperson to send across wishes for Independence Day to her fans and to the public.

The champion athlete took to Twitter to give out a simple, yet special message on the eve of India’s 71st year of Independence.

“Independence also stands for the country developing in all fields and spheres. It is time that each athlete pledges to give our best and raise the standards of sports in our country. The independent India tricolour should always fly high #Happy72ndIndependenceDay,” she tweeted.

18-year-old Hima Das scripted history last month when she become the first Indian woman to win gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships.

Hima is a top contender for a medal at the Asian Games that will begin in Indonesia on Saturday.
