Championship leader Mark Webber finished third in the second Red Bull to increase his advantage from five to 11 points in the standings after the Australian had collided with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and forced the Briton to retire.
With four races remaining, Australia's Webber has 202 points, Spaniard Alonso is on 191 and Hamilton lies a further 10 points adrift in third place.
