Indian shuttlers had a bad day in office as Ajay Jayaram and H S Prannoy failed to cross the opening hurdle at the prestigious All England Championships in Birmingham on Wednesday.
World No. 21 Ajay Jayaram's fight ended with a narrow 18-21, 21-19, 19-21 loss to World No 16 Hong Kong's NG Ka Long Angus in the men's singles event.
In another match, H S Prannoy played his heart out before going down to China’s Xue Song 20-22, 15-21.
There was equally bad news in the doubles competition.
2010 Commonwealth Games champions Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa suffered a 24-26, 17-21 loss to the Dutch pair of Samantha Barning and Iris Tabeling in the opening round of the women's doubles.
In men's doubles, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy also went down fighting against Malaysians Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan.
They lost by a 21-16, 13-21, 15-21 margin.
