Blackburn edge past Blyth

January 06, 2009 15:50 IST

Blackburn Rovers put their Premier League worries behind them by beating minor league Blyth Spartans 1-0 in the FA Cup on Monday.

Chilean international Carlos Villanueva scored the game's only goal with a curling 25-metre free kick in the second half of a match dominated by Blackburn, who are second from bottom in the Premier League.

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce, who replaced Paul Ince in December, made 11 changes to the side that conceded two late goals at home to Manchester City in a 2-2 draw on December 28.

The win over Blyth, who are 118 places below Rovers in the sixth division, means the six-times FA Cup winners will travel to the Stadium of Light for a fourth round clash with fellow top-flight club Sunderland.
