Spain need to develop a winning mentality and hope luck goes their way if they are to emulate the 1964 side that won the European championship, according to coach Luis Aragones.
Spain won their only major international trophy at senior level when they beat the Soviet Union 2-1 in the final of the 1964 championships at the Bernabeu.
The current side have been drawn alongside defending champions Greece, Russia and Sweden in Group D of next month's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
"That team had some great players as we do now, but the important thing is to have the same spirit and that dash of good fortune that everyone needs in life," Aragones was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Wednesday.
"We need to work as hard as them and have the strength and conviction that we can be champions. In football you have to step on to the pitch convinced that you are going to win even though anything can happen.
"Today there is nothing to choose between the big national sides .... That's why having a winning mentality is so important."
Spain play two warm-up games before leaving for their training base near Innsbruck next week, meeting Peru in Huelva on Saturday and the United States in Santander next Wednesday.
