Newcastle United and England midfielder Joey Barton was refused bail on Thursday and will remain in police custody until a court hearing on January 16, court officials said.
The 25-year-old is charged with assault and affray following an incident in the centre of Liverpool in the early hours of December 27.
He appeared before Liverpool magistrates via videolink from prison for Thursday's hearing. He was refused bail after the court decided he "would commit offences while on bail", an official said.
He was arrested with his 19-year-old brother and a 27-year-old woman outside a McDonald's in Liverpool, Barton's hometown. His co-accused have been granted bail.
Since his arrest, Barton has missed Newcastle's Premier League defeats away at Chelsea and at home to Manchester City.
Newcastle face two more tough games before his hearing, including a league match at champions Manchester United.
Barton joined Newcastle from Manchester City in June 2007 for a fee of 5.8 million pounds.
