The Indian challenge in the China Open singles ended on Tuesday with Rohan Bopanna retiring midway through his first round match against seventh seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Bopanna, who entered the main draw after playing the qualifiers, was trailing 3-6, 0-1 when he called it quits from the ATP event.

The Davis Cupper dropped his serve twice in the first set and eventually conceded the tie after spending 52 minutes on court.

Bopanna is pairing with the seasoned Mahesh Bhupathi in the doubles competition, where they have been given the top seeding. The Indian pair faces South African Chris Haggard and Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in the first round.
