Venus out to stop in-form Jankovic

June 01, 2007 10:53 IST

Venus Williams will be looking to set the record straight on Friday when she takes on in-form Jelena Jankovic in the pick of the women's third-round matches at the French Open.

Williams surrendered her Wimbledon crown last July when she lost to the 22-year-old Serb in the third round and Jankovic has been on an upward curve ever since.

Jankovic has never been beyond the third round at Roland Garros but has already bagged three titles this year, including last month on clay in Rome.

Ranked fifth in the world she was widely tipped to make a big impression here, although a third-round meeting with a player of the Grand Slam winning calibre of Williams was not what she would have wanted.

Following that match on Centre Court Roger Federer continues his quest for the one Grand Slam title to elude him when the Swiss world number one faces Italian claycourter Potito Starace.

Women's defending champion Justin Henin also faces an Italian job against Mara Santangelo.

French fans will have plenty of players to cheer for on Friday in the men's singles.

Youngster Gael Monfils tackles gritty Argentine David Nalbandian while Michael Llodra also faces a tall order when he plays Russian fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko.

In the women's draw, French hope Marion Bartoli takes on Russia's Elena Dementieva, while Serena Williams, looking to follow up her surprise victory at the Australian Open, faces Michaella Krajicek.
