Hockey Olympian Jaman Lal Sharma died at a local hospital in Lucknow on Sunday, sources said.
Sharma, 84, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night after suffering a brain hemorrahage.
Sharma was a defender of repute and was part of the silver winning Indian hockey team in the Rome Olympics in 1960 and was also the coach of the country's hockey team on many occasions.
He also held the post of Director - Sports in the state and was actively involved in promoting hockey by training youngsters.
For his contribution for the game, Sharma was awarded the Padma Shri award.
A number of sports organisations condoled the death of Sharma.
