Vikas Gowda failed to lift himself against the elite competitors in the world as he failed to qualify for the discus throw finals at the World Championships in Athletics at Osaka, on Sunday.

The US-based athlete managed an effort of 61.22m to finish ninth among 15 throwers in Group A and 17th among 29 competitors in the fray, thereby missing out on a spot in the final.

Gowda had achieved his personal best of 64.96m, a national record, at a meet in the US earlier this year, but could not match those efforts at the big stage.

What was more disappointing was that after his first attempt, Gowda produced two foul throws which put paid to his hopes.

The qualification standard was set at 64.50m, well under Gowda's personal best, or at least the best 12 making it to the finals, so anywhere near his best mark would have got the Indian a place in the medal round.

Six of the 12 athletes making it to the finals did so with efforts under the qualification mark with distances below Gowda's personal best, which should be a reason for disappointment for the Indian.

Estonian Gerd Kanter threw the disc to a distance of 67.45m in his third attempt to get to the top of the pile in the qualification round.
