Bopanna, Rao keep US Open hopes alive

India's Rohan Bopanna and Sunitha Rao advanced into the second round of the US Open qualifiers while Prakash Amritraj's match was halted due to rain on Wednesday.

Bopanna came through easily against France's Julien Jeanpierre 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round, which was put off to Wednesday after the first day of qualifying was washed out.

The top-ranked Indian will play 19th seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in the second round on Thursday, while Amritraj is placed 6-3, 1-6, 4-5 against Japan's Kei Nishikori.

Pakistan's Aisam Qureshi overcame 27th seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) to set up a second round with Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva.

In the women's section, the US-based Sunitha rallied from a set down to beat Romania's Monica Niculescu 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. She will next play number 20 seed Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan.
