American Justin Gatlin's world record in the men's 100 metres has been amended to 9.77 seconds from 9.76 seconds due to an error in the reading of the result, the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) said on Wednesday.

Gatlin's time would be adjusted to 9.77 seconds and, pending ratification, would equal the previous record set in 2005 by Jamaica's Asafa Powell, the IAAF said in a statement.

The ruling body said it had been informed by the company responsible for the timing of an error in the reading of the result recorded by Gatlin in Doha on Friday.

Based on his time recorded after winning the race, Gatlin ran 9.766 seconds, which was then announced as a world record 9.76, the statement read.
