Indian challenge at German Open ends

The Indian challenge at the German Open Badminton championship in Mulheim an der Ruhr came to a tame end as all the three shuttlers who had entered the second round were ousted by their higher-ranked opponents.

Former national champion Chetan Anand stretched eighth seed Dicky Palyama of The Netherlands in the first game but ended up losing 14-17, 5-15 while 10th seed Anders Boesen of Denmark made light of the challenge of Nikhil Kanetkar, winning 15-8, 15-9 to advance to the quarter-finals.

In the women's section, national champion Aparna Popat was found wanting against sixth seed Jae Youn Jun of Korea and went down 5-11, 1-11.

Former All England champion Pullela Gopichand, reigning national champion Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhat and Abhinn Shyam Gupta lost in the first round itself.
