BRDC chairman ousted after Silverstone deal

January 13, 2005 10:24 IST

The British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone is secure despite the sudden ousting of the circuit owners' chairman Ray Bellm, former champion Jackie Stewart said on Wednesday.

Bellm, who played a key role in negotiating a five-year deal between the British Racing Drivers' Club and Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, was voted out of office at a BRDC board meeting on Tuesday.

"There is no issue over the security of the contract between Formula One Management and the BRDC," the BBC quoted BRDC president Stewart as saying.

"Bernie was one of the first people I called after the meeting. There is no problem there. The issues [concerning Bellm's departure] were involving corporate governance. The development of Silverstone is our number one priority."

The British Grand Prix had been in danger of being axed for the first time in the history of the Formula One world championship until the deal was struck last month. It is scheduled for July 10.
