Johansson and Enqvist advance

January 05, 2005 19:25 IST

Joachim Johansson and Thomas Enqvist both won second-round matches in the Australian men's hardcourt championship in Adelaide on Wednesday to set up a showdown between the two Swedes.

World number 11 and tournament second seed Johansson beat Belgium's Xavier Malisse 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 7-6 (7-2) and Enqvist revived memories of last year's Davis Cup tie in Adelaide with his 6-3 6-3 victory over seventh seed Florian Mayer of Germany.

Johansson will play Davis Cup teammate Enqvist in the quarter-finals. Enqvist won the Adelaide tournament in 1999.

"I really enjoy to play on that court," the 30-year-old Enqvist told reporters.

"It's such a nice sound

on the court. I have great memories.

"I've played a lot of great matches out there," added Enqvist, who was part of Sweden's upset win over Australia in their first-round Davis Cup tie in February.

"My game is a very aggressive kind of baseline tennis. But I also mixed up the shots, so they don't really know what is coming and I think I did that well."

Germany's third seed Nicolas Kiefer won his second-round match against France's Cyril Saulnier 6-4 6-3 and Belgium's Oliver Rochus upset the Czech Republic's sixth seed Radek Stepanek 6-0 6-3.

Australia's top seed Lleyton Hewitt plays his second-round match against Argentina's Agustin Calleri on Thursday.
