Beckham to resume training soon

October 11, 2004 12:23 IST
England captain David Beckham is expected back in Madrid on Wednesday and will be able to resume light training despite cracking a rib, the Real Madrid website said on Sunday.

However, it is uncertain when Beckham will return to action on the pitch, Realmadrid.com quoted Luis Serratosa, a member of Real Madrid's medical team, as saying.

Beckham suffered a hairline fracture to a rib during England's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Wales at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Realmadrid.com said Beckham would spend the next 48 hours under observation and resting.

"On
Wednesday, David Beckham will be in Madrid and will be able to return to light training in the gym," Serratosa said.

"We don't want to rush -- although the player is very keen to put himself at the coach's disposal -- since we want the rib to heal perfectly," he added.

"His return to the playing field depends on how he progresses in the coming days and on the pain, as this type of injury is very uncomfortable and can even bother you when you breathe," Serratosa told the website.

Beckham had an afternoon to remember back at Old Trafford where he spent more than a decade of his career with Manchester United.

He scored a spectacular goal after 76 minutes to secure England's victory, then got himself booked and suspended for their next qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku on Wednesday.
