Real to probe dismal season

May 24, 2004 17:44 IST

Real Madrid will hold a board meeting on Monday to review the team's humiliating end to the season and are expected to announce the dismissal of coach Carlos Queiroz.

"The week will begin with a board meeting and we will make some important decisions," Real's sporting director Jorge Valdano told reporters after watching the team lose 4-1 to Real Sociedad on Sunday, their fifth loss in a row.

"We are going to try and analyse the whole season and not just the end because if we did that we would go mad.

"We have been desperate for the season to end because we cannot find any answers to what has happened."

Queiroz, who took charge at the start of the season, says he has not been told anything about his future, but Spanish media have reported that the former Manchester United assistant would be sacked after the meeting.

Former player and Spain national coach Jose Antonio Camacho is thought to be the leading candidate to replace him.

The board is also expected to discuss the schedule for this year's presidential elections and changes in plans for the pre-season tour to Asia.

The fact that Real finished fourth in the table means they now have to play a potentially awkward Champions League qualifier in August and will have to readjust their plans for a money-spinning tour of the Far East.

The club also announced that the medical scheduled for new signing Walter Samuel on Monday had been suspended and would not be held until after the Copa America had finished in July.

The 26-year-old Argentine international defender signed for the club from AS Roma last week for 25 million euros.
