Vonlanthen is youngest scorer

June 22, 2004 03:00 IST

Switzerland striker Johann Vonlanthen became the youngest goalscorer in European Championship finals history when he equalised in the Group B match against France on Monday.

Vonlanthen is aged 18 years and four months, three months younger than England striker Wayne Rooney when he scored twice in the Group B match against Switzerland on Thursday.

Vonlanthen's strike after 26 minutes against champions France, which levelled the match at 1-1, was Switzerland's first goal of the tournament.

Vonlanthen was playing only because striker Alexander Frei was provisionally suspended until the end of Euro 2004 after television footage showed him spitting at an England player during last week's match in Coimbra.
