Li sets sights on emulating hero

July 30, 2004

Li Xiaopeng has set his sights on Olympic domination after being untouchable in his favourite disciplines over the past two seasons.

A product of the famed Hunan Gymnastics School, Li is an innovative gymnast who constantly strives to set new standards in the sport.

After walking away with two gold medals in Sydney four years ago, Li now intends to emulate the three titles won by his hero and compatriot Li Ning at the Los Angeles Games 20 years ago.

The 2003 world gymnast of the Year is targetting success in the parallel bars, the vault and the men's team event.

A specialist on the parallel bars, the Olympic champion is expected to showcase a new element during his routine on the apparatus.

Along with the bars, Li has also been unparalleled on the vault in major competition over the past two seasons.

"It would be fantastic if I could come away with gold medals in my three events," said Li.

"There is no big secret (to my success) ... I work hard at it, so that when I get to competition I know I should be strong."

The 23-year-old was the top medal winner at the last two world championships and looks a good bet to continue that trend in Athens.
