August 25, 2004 22:08 IST

Britain and South Africa won their playoffs at the bottom of the table at the Olympic men's hockey tournament on Wednesday, leaving Argentina and Egypt to battle for the wooden spoon.

South Africa beat Egypt 5-1 with their top striker Greg Nicol netting a penalty-corner within the first two minutes and popping in another two field goals later.

Eygpt had more chances at goal but only managed to net one penalty strike.

The South Africans will play for ninth or 10th place against Britain, who powered past Argentina 4-1.

Despite putting on the pressure towards the end, Argentina could not get to the net and now meet Egypt for 11th or 12th.
