Ballack named Germany captain

August 16, 2004 18:54 IST

Midfielder Michael Ballack has been named as Germany's new captain, replacing goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, before Wednesday's friendly international against Austria.

"I wanted as the captain an outfield player who was in contact with all members of the team. Ballack is exactly the linkman I had imagined," said new coach Juergen Klinsmann on Monday.

"I spoke with both players about this and both accepted the decision. Oliver Kahn will deputise for Ballack in future," Klinsmann added.
