Coria wins Monte Carlo title

April 26, 2004 12:34 IST

Argentine clay specialist Guillermo Coria thrashed Germany's Rainer Schuettler 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday.

The third seed, runner-up last year, claimed his second Masters Series crown with a devastating display of baseline expertise to spoil Schuettler's 28th birthday.

Coria tore apart his German opponent's game in a two-hour demonstration, extending his winning run on clay to 26 matches and establishing himself as one of the leading contenders to win next month's French Open.

Schuettler, seeded four, had beaten three former world number ones en route to the final but the 2003 Australian Open runner-up never looked like securing his first Masters Series title.
