England captain David Beckham believes that his high-profile move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has allowed him to prove that he is more footballer than global marketing phenomenon.

"I think that one thing I had to prove to people when I came to Real Madrid was that I could actually play football," Beckham told reporters at a news conference in Madrid.

"Hopefully I'm doing that and I'll carry on doing that because I'm enjoying the city, I'm enjoying playing with these players and the way fans have reacted has made me feel at home straight away."

"I'm definitely more of a footballer than anything else because I'm now playing for one of the best teams in the world -- Real Madrid."

The 28-year-old midfielder has been showered with praise by team mates, fans and the Spanish

media for his performances this season, with many commentators surprised by his hard work and commitment.

"It may probably come as a surprise to Real Madrid fans who have never seen me play week in and week out, but I've always worked hard for the team and for my team mates and I'll always carry on doing that," Beckham said.

He believes the best is yet to come for him in the centre of the Real midfield.

"I played on the right side for Manchester United and England for so many years. This is a change that I have enjoyed immensely since I've come to Real Madrid."

"One of the reasons I came here was to improve my game and if I do become a better player it will be because of the players around me and because of playing in the Spanish league."

"If anyone asked me I would say coming to Real was one of the best decisions I have ever made."
