India tasted its first victory in the singles event of the World Badminton Championship being held at Birmingham in the United Kingdom when Trupti Murgunde on Tuesday beat Spain's Dolores Marco to move into the second round.
Murgunde, a last minute entry in the main draw, came from a game behind to take the match 9-11, 11-4, 11-9 in 56 minutes, according to information received in Delhi.
In the next round, she will take on Kaori Mori of Japan, who stunned 15th Kelly Morgan of Wales 11-7, 13-12.
However, the doubles pair of V Diju and Thomas Sanave lost their opening round match in straight games despite putting up a brave fight.
They lost to Thailand's Patapol Ngernsrisuk and Sudket Prapkamol 13-15, 12-15.
On Monday, the doubles team of Jaseel P Ismail and Jaison Xavier was also ousted in the first round.
