Shikha Tondon bettered the Indian national record in the 100 metres backstroke but was no match for the top competitors at the World swimming championships in Barcelona.
Shikha finished 41st in the qualifying rounds of the event with a timing of 1 minute, 7.82 seconds which was marginally better than the previous national record, Virendra Nanavati, general secretary of the Swimming Federation of India, who is accompanying the Indian team in Barcelona, said..
The other Indian on show, Sivaranjani Vaidyanathan, did not start in the 100m backstroke event and finished in the 52nd position in the 100m breaststroke, where she clocked 1 minute, 22.41 seconds.
