Kuerten sets his sights on Olympic medal

December 17, 2003 10:16 IST

Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten said on Tuesday that his target for next season was to win a medal at the Olympic Games in Athens.

"For a guy like me, who's already won a Grand Slam event and a Masters and has been world number one, winning an Olympic medal would be a dream, it would complete my career," he told reporters.

The Brazilian, three-times French Open champion, finished the year 15th on the entry rankings after winning two ATP tournaments in Auckland and St Petersburg.

However Kuerten, who rose to the world number one spot at the end of the 2000 season, failed to make much impression in the Grand Slam events this year, with his best effort coming at Roland Garros where he reached the fourth round.

But he is hopeful of more titles, especially on his favoured clay courts.

"I'm sure my best chances really are on clay," he said. "It's very important for me to start winning on clay again.

"I have a dangerous game and if I manage to win two or three matches in a row, the other guys start looking at me in a different way.

"The main thing for me is to stay motivated. I've been on the circuit for a number of years, I've had excellent results, I've reached number one and I still look forward to training."
