Garbage lights up this panchayat
Date: September 26
Location: Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu
Garbage, right?
Waste, right?
No.
Nothing goes to waste here. Literally.
The residents of Kanjirangal in Sivaganga district produce about 500 kg of garbage daily, but don't have any place to dump it.
What they do have, though, are electricity bills, which amount to about Rs 12 lakh a year, or half the panchayat's annual budget; this includes the cost of keeping street lights burning.
So the residents decided to use their garbage to defray their bill.
Their garbage is now processed in a biogas plant -- set up under the National Rurban Mission with the help of the local residents and the panchayat -- to generate electricity.
"Our new initiative helps reduce electricity bills and dispose waste efficiently," explains says Panchayat President K S M Manimuthu.
