Muslim guardian gets Hindu girl married

Location: Vijayapura, Karnataka

A Muslim man -- the guardian of an orphaned Hindu girl -- facilitated her marriage to a Hindu man as per Vedic rituals in Vijayapura on July 31.

Mehboob Masli is the guardian of 18-year-old Pooja Vadigeri.

After her relatives refused to bring her up, Masli brought up Pooja as his daughter.

"It was my duty to get her married to a man from the religion she belongs to," Masli said with a smile.

 


He helps drug addicts

Situated in the heart of Itanagar, the Deepak Nabam Living Home is a haven for more than 200 people from all over Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of India.

The home shelters those who are physically challenged, terminally sick and injured, drug addicts, victims of social and domestic violence, child and human trafficking, and other destitute sections of society.

"I was an alcohol addict and was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in 2005. I did not have any plan to set up this home. But as I was an alcohol addict, I understood the pain of others," says Deepak Nabam, founder of the home.

 


RPF constable saves woman's life

Location: Secunderabad

A Railway Protection Force constable in Secunderabad saved the life of a woman who fell in the gap between the coach and platform while boarding a moving train on July 31.

Dinesh Singh rushed to the woman's rescue and pulled her to safety. He was later presented with a certificate and cash award by railway officials.


150-year-old school gets lease of life

Date: August 1
Location: Ahmedabad

A 150-year-old heritage school building in Ahmedabad's Khamasa is all set to be reborn as an innovation centre for girls.

The school was abandoned following the 2001 earthquake.

The restoration is expected to be completed within the next two years, at a cost of Rs 32 million.

 


Terrace jasmine earns woman Rs 15,000 a month

Location: Mangaluru

Kirana, an advocate in Mangaluru's Konchady area, started growing jasmine flowers on her terrace during last year's coronavirus lockdown.

Today, Kirana sells the flowers and earns around Rs 15,000 a month.

 


Neelakurinji flowers turn hillside blue

Date: August 2
Location: Idukki, Kerala

Idukki's Shalomkunnu (Shalom Hills) in Santhanpara panchayat is blossoming with blue Neelakurinji flowers which blooms once every 12 years.

Strobilanthes Kunthiana, to give its scientific name, is known as Neelakurinji and Kurinji in Malayalam and Tamil. It is found in the Shola forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Nilgiris, which means 'blue mountains', got its name from these Neelankurinji flowers.

This time, over 10 acres of Neelakurinji flowers have covered the Shalomkunnu, carpeting it in blue. However, these hills are not open for tourists to visit due to Covid restrictions.

 


Rare Pangolin found

Location: Noida, Uttar Pradesh

A rare species of pangolin was found on the roadside in Noida Sector 53. The pangolin was rescued and handed over to forest department officials.

 


Tank collapses in seconds

Date: July 31
Location: Junagadh, Gujarat

A 40-year-old overhead water tank in Khirsara village, Junagadh, collapsed in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported.
