Woman forced to choose which child to save

September 08, 2010 16:22 IST

A mother was forced to choose between saving the life of one of her two children when the car she was driving met with an accident and fell into a ditch.

Rachel Edwards, a resident of Dunmow in Essex, England, was driving her 16-year-old son Jack and two-year-old daughter Isabella when their car hit a pothole and then fell into the ditch.

Edwards, who is six months pregnant, managed to get out of the car and swim to the surface. She dived back in and grabbed Isabella, but could not save Jack, who was trapped behind a closed door.

Edwards told the Daily Mail that she has spent every moment since the accident thinking about how she could have saved both her children.

She told the daily that she could not reach out to Jack as she would have to let go of Isabella then. Edwards was forced to leave Jack behind as she could not let go of Isabella, who would have drowned.

When she tried to go back for her son, she was restrained by paramedics, who managed to pull the teenager out of the car. But he was declared dead at the hospital.
