The flood situation in West Bengal continued to be grim with most of the major rivers in spate following increased discharge from DVC dams and barrages as the death toll shot to 47 on Saturday.
An official release said several rivers in north and south Bengal were flowing above the extreme danger level following releases from DVC dams and barrages on Damodar, Kangsabati and Mayurakshi rivers.
DVC discharged 70,000 cusecs water which increased to a massive 1.03 lakh cusecs with release from Durgapur barrage. The situation is likely to be the same with the met office forecasting isolated heavy rainfall in few places of the state.
Besides claiming 47 lives, including 29 men and 18 women, the surging waters have affected 29.66 lakh people in 251 blocks and 81 municipalities spread over 15 districts, the release said.
A total 67,745 affected people have been sheltered in 413 camps and relief materials including 3,50,000 tarpaulines, 4085 mt rice and relief contingency of Rs 1.27 crore were despatched, it added.
