West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has announced that 10 per cent reservation in jobs would be given to socially, educationally and economically backward Muslims.
The state government took the step after the conclusion of a central committee meeting on Monday.
It has been declared that the reservation would made be under the OBC category. Those with an annual income of 4.5 lakh will not be beneficiaries of this rule.
With this effect, the quota for Muslims in Bengal would be 17 per cent compared to 7 percent quota at present.
