High tide and abnormally high sea waves caused panic in parts of the Kerala coast on Friday, but no casualty or major damage to properties were reported.

Surge of sea waves was reported from many parts of the coastal belt, official sources said.

Revenue and police officials who visited the affected areas said there was no cause for apprehension.

In Poovar, near Thiruvananthapuram, about 200 families were moved to a school building.

No serious damage to houses were reported but a road linking fishing hamlets was flooded causing traffic disruption, locals said.

In Srayeekkal, in Kollam district, where the memories of the tsunami are still fresh in the minds of the coastal folk, people panicked on seeing the high waves in the morning.

Similar waves had struck coastal hamlets on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram two days ago, submerging about 50 huts.
