Journalists to US need 'I' class visa

June 03, 2004 21:45 IST

Journalists entering the United States are now required to possess an "I" class visa even if they are nationals of a visa waiver country.

This has been specified under the Immigration and Nationality Act and is applicable on all representatives of foreign press, radio, film or other foreign information media travelling to the US to engage in journalism.

Holding an "I" visa allows a working journalist to enter the US for as long as needed to work on an assignment and will avoid a port of entry turnaround.  The Immigration and Nationality Act, Section 101(1)(15)(B) specifically excludes such persons from the use of a "B" visa or visa waiver entry.
