The Bharatiya Janata Party has lost the trust of the Hindu society and its president, Lal Kishenchand Advani, is "not fit" to be a mass leader, Vishwa Hindu Parishad working president Ashok Singhal said on Monday.

"I do not know how long Advani will continue [as party president], but I feel he is only good as a stop-gap president," Singhal told reporters at Vadtal in Gujarat on the sidelines of a nine-day training camp of VHP workers.

Advani has proved to be a ''failure'' in the eyes of Hindus, he said.

When asked what are VHP's expectations from the BJP, Singhal said: "I have no expectation from them. They have lost the trust of Hindu society."

He also said there was a need for a ''political tool'' other than the BJP to pursue Hindutva issues aggressively. Asked to elaborate what he meant by a ''political tool,'' he said: "Keep patience; you will come to know of it gradually.''

He said the reasons for the failure of the BJP in the Lok Sabha election was its lack of leadership and control in the party.
