Tension continues to prevail in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where two persons were killed and 12 injured in a communal clash on Wednesday, according to officials.

"The situation is under control since last night, when the administration clamped curfew in parts of the riot-affected town," state Principal Home Secretary Pradeep Kumar told rediff.com on Thursday.

The incident had caused an alarm because one of the victims was an imam.

"Trouble started following pelting of stones at a Holi procession, which led to a clash between Hindus and Muslims. No sooner news of a stabbing… broke out, mobs launched a counter-offensive in which the imam was stabbed to death,” an official told rediff.com

Thirty people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Forty-five people were also held following “minor incidents” of violence in Jaunpur, Moradabad, Sambhal and Barielly districts.
