Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met Union home minister P Chidambaram and discussed the prevailing law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Gandhi is having a running battle with the UP chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayavati on various issues, including law and order situation.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told rediff.com that the meeting on UP law and order is one of the several meetings Rahul Gandhi had in the last few weeks.

Singhvi was very critical of the incident of burning the house of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Rita Bahugana Joshi by BSP workers after she gave a controversial statement on Mayawati. Joshi was booked under the SC/ST act, but was let off by the court

"If you look at the track record of the UP administration led by Mayawati,  you will find that her director general of police was flying to various places and was handing over paltry sums of money to the rape victims. If we work out the number of women who had underwent humiliation of rape, the number would definitely run into several thousand," the Congress spokesperson said.
