5 killed in ULFA attacks in Assam

Five persons were killed and another seriously injured as banned United Liberation Front of Asom militants launched two separate attacks on Hindi-speaking people in eastern Assam on Tuesday evening.

Police informed that four armed youths suspected to be members of the banned ULFA, came to the house of Babulal Shah, a grocery wholesale dealer at Borhat town, about 87 km away from district headquarters, and opened indiscriminate fire at around 6.15 pm.

Babulal Shah died on the spot while his son Ashok Shah was seriously injured and rushed to Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh. A team of policemen and the army were rushed from the district headquarters to Borhat.

Meanwhile, four Hindi-speaking persons including three of a family were killed in an attack by suspected ULFA militants at Belbari under Tengakhat police station in Dibrugarh district on Tuesday evening.

A police team rushed to the spot on hearing about the incident.

Earlier in the day, the banned ULFA's 28th battalion leader Prabal Neog called up a section of the media to warn of a series of attacks in eastern Assam districts.
